With the use of google classroom, I will be changing the focus of this page from a school information page to a young adult book review and book challenge page. Updates coming!

Welcome back to a new school year! This year we have big changes – we will be semesterised! This means half of your courses will happen from September to January and the other half will happen from February to June.

I will be teaching English 3201 (two sections) and English 3202 first term. This means that my 3201 students will write their public exam in January.

We will have six classes per course a week – one day in the cycle we will have a double class. There is also a space in the schedule to add an addition class for one course per week, which will be determined monthly by administration. This will ensure that if we miss a class of a section, we have a chance to catch up so that they as a class do not fall behind.

As in the past few years, my classes will be using Google Classroom. This means they do not have to worry about leaving notes or assignments at home and have the chance for immediate feedback on their work.

All exams are to be written in pen – pencil is needed for 3201 and the scantron.

Exam period starts soon! With Midterms, the concern is always with the weather. What happens if there is a closure for weather – or for anything?

First, the listening exam on Friday. If we are closed on Friday, that part of the exam will be pushed to when we return to classes. If that happens, I will have specifics on this site as soon as I’ve been given them.

Exams during the exam period fall into two different scenarios.

Scenario One: School is closed for half a day. If that’s the case, the exams written on that half day get pushed to the end of exams. So, as an example, if school was closed for the morning when 1201 is being written. The English 1201 exam and any other exams in that time slot would be written the day after the last scheduled day of exams. Barring any other closures, that would be Monday, the 30th. If there are multiple half day closures, the exams would be scheduled in the order in which they were supposed to be written. If this impacts any of the exams for my classes, I will put the new day and time on this site and on twitter.

Scenario Two: School is closed for the full day. If school is closed for a full day, all exams shift one day. So, as an example, if school is closed on Tuesday, the Tuesday exams will be written on Wednesday, the Wednesday exams will be written Thursday, Thursday exams on Friday and Friday exams move to the following Monday.

A quick update for all my academic classes. Students have been working very hard over the last few days – our Ultimate Deadline for this term is today, Friday the 13th at 3:00! At this point, work we are doing is directed towards helping them on their midterm exams, so they are finding it useful at this time.

On Friday, January 20th, the listening portion of the exam takes place. We will have this portion of the exam, which is worth 10 of the 65 exam marks, during period one. Students will go to an assigned class and write this section with their English class mates. My classes are assigned as follows:

English 1201 F – Writes with Mr Pinksen in room 116
English 2201 A – Writes with Ms. Hiscock in room 115
English 2201 B – Writes with me in my room, 209
English 2201 G – Writes with Ms Winsor in room 207
English 3201 C – Writes with Mr. Veitch in room 206

If they have to miss this part of their exam, we will need a medical note from a doctor to excuse them.

The schedule for the written portion of the exams is as follows:
Monday, January 23rd – AM Session – 8:45 – 10:45 – English 1201
Monday, January 23rd – PM Session – 12:30 – 2:30 – English 2201
Wednesday, January 25th – AM Session – 8:45-10:45 – English 3201

Again, if a student has to miss this exam for medical reasons, we will need a note from a doctor. The exam is worth 20% of their final grade. The content for each of the exams is as follows:

Poetry (a poem we have not done in class) – 19/65 marks
Artistic Visual (one not done in class) – 6/65 marks
Analytical Essay (based on their choice of one of our major works from this term) – 20/65 marks
Personal Response – 10/65 marks

The major works to which they can refer are
1201: ‘Divergent’ by Veronica Roth or ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, done as a film study
2201: ‘The Fault in our Stars’ by John Green, ‘Oedipus’ by Sophocles and ‘Night’ by Elie Wiesel
3201: The novel they chose in the fall (‘Huck Finn’, ‘A Separate Peace’, ‘The Stone Angel’ or ‘Catcher in the Rye’), ‘The Secret Life of Bees’ (done as a film study) or ‘Antigone’ by Sophocles.

Next week, my intern, Ms. Kelsey Gill, and I will be reviewing all of these areas of study, including listening.

Please also note that weather may shift our exam schedule and if this happens, students will be expected to write on the new date regardless of travel or other plans. Should school only be open for a half day for reasons such as weather, the missed exam will be rescheduled to the end of the exam period. Should school be closed full day (ie. weather), exams scheduled for that day will be moved to the next day.

English 1201 – Upcoming Plans and Evaluations

Novel Study

We have just finished our study of the novel ‘Divergent’ by Veronica Roth. The students completed two small speaking activities, two submissions of written work and an analytical essay test finished the unit. For those who did not write the test or those who did not score as high as they would like, the retest is at lunchtime in my room on Monday the 5^th of December. Students will know their scores by that time and can make that decision. The question, which was given to them, will remain the same, and they can bring a page of notes and their book to help them in their work.

 

Film Study

We will be completing a film study of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ from December 9^th to 21^st. Students will receive a workbook to complete during and after watching this classic film. This booklet will be due January 4^th. This is the second of the two major works to which they can refer on their exam.

 

Poetry and Visuals

We will be completing a Poetry and Visuals unit from January 4^th to January 13^th. There will be in class work that students will complete and pass in before their midterm exams.

Thematic Unit

Students are now completing a thematic unit with an emphasis on Poetry and Visuals. This booklet is due December 13^th. Students have been told that the last three pieces in the booklet will only be corrected for extra credit; everything up to page nineteen is regular credit and must be completed. There is a poetry and visuals test on December 8^th.

Dramatic Work

We will be studying the play ‘Oedipus Rex’ by Sophocles. There will be in class content and literary work which will be due January 3^rd. This is the second of the three major works to which they can refer on their midterm.

Novel Study

We will study the novel ‘Night’ by Elie Wiesel from January 3^rd to 13^th. This novel will be provided to students to read independently within the next week. Work will be completed in class. This is the third of the three major works to which they can refer on their midterm.

Most of this two hour exam will take place during the examination period of January 23^rd to January 27^th. Students write in the gym. Previous to this exam, students will complete a listening component for this exam at a time set by the school. More details on specific dates will be provided when they are determined. It’s a new school year and I’m slowly getting organized. This year I am teaching English 1201, 2201, 3201 and 3202. I’m quite excited to be directly involved in the continuum from grade ten through grade twelve! So far, as the classes are settling, they are showing that they are full of students eager to learn and excited about graduating high school.

I will, as always, use this front page to communicate information to my classes and their parents. This is in addition to power school and information from your kids as they go home talking about their day! (I know… they don’t necessarily go home telling you anything!)

For each of my classes, I have a link for notes and a link for assignments. These can be found in the menu to the side. I will put up as much information here as I can. When an assignment is due, I will indicate the due date and then once that date is passed, upload an alternate assignment for students to complete.

Students in all academic courses have been issued books and need to have them read by the middle of October. Please encourage this as much as possible!
