If the assignment title has a line through it (like this) it means that it is past due and students must complete the alternate assignment. There are, by my count, twenty six teaching days left until exams. This is, of course, not including weekends, a PD day on May 13th and a holiday on May 23rd. This means the following:

1. There is not much evaluation left in each course. I will detail what’s planned below, but the amount of work given will not be great.
2. Review will be happening and students CAN study for English.
3. Attendance is vital at this point, especially given the review which is embedded into all work. For each course, within those 26 days, that means 16 or so classes. Missing two classes means missing 13 percent of the time left in that course.
4. June 2nd is the final ultimate deadline. This includes work from April 15th to June 2nd.

The administrative team is working on the exam schedule, however I can tell you the following:

1. All academic levels have a listening section on May 31st. We will know the exact schedule soon, but it does include 1201, 2201 and 3201. The listening section is worth 10/60 marks on their exam. Missing this section requires a doctors note, just like missing an exam.
2. Based on information from CDLI, the English 2201 exam will be in the morning session of exams on Monday the 13th. The English 1201 exam will be in the afternoon session of Monday the 13th. Both are common exams with the rest of the province. The 13th is the first day of exams.

 

In 1201, we will be doing the following evaluation:

Into the Woods/Fairy Tales Booklet: We will be watching the video of the Broadway production of ‘Into the Woods’ and completing work on this. This will be due May 17th.

Research: Students will be doing research on the development and history of fairy tales. They will NOT be writing a research paper, but instead will be making notes, writing a paragraph and using citations and references. We will have lots of time in the LRC for them to work on this. This is due June 2nd.

Booktalk: Students will pick ANY BOOK they want and present on it. This will begin around the 27th of May.

After that, will we be doing review.

In 2201, we will be doing the following evaluation:

The Laramie Project: We have viewed the ‘Laramie Project’ and have the scripts for the 10 Years Later Epilogue. Students are doing a mixture of reading and viewing and completing activities on this work. This work is due on the 16th.

Thematic Unit: The students and I will be working through a thematic unit. This will be due June 2nd.

Book Talk: Students will pick ANY BOOK they want and present on it. This will begin around the 27th of May.

In 3202, we will be doing the following evaluation:

Book Study: We are currently working on the book ‘Heist Society’. We will continue work on this until May 20th.

Media: We will do a unit on Media

Thematic Unit: We will do a study of short stories, essays, poems and visuals from the text book.

It’s been crazy times at PWC this month. In English we’ve been working on all kinds of ideas and projects! Students in 1201 and 2201 can talk about the novels they’ve done, 3202 can spout wisdom from ‘Into the Woods’ and we can all talk about looking forward to the break!

 

I wanted to point out an assignment I’ve posted for 1201 and 2201. For each of those courses, I’ve made an optional assignment covering several genres from this year – a short story, an essay, a poem, a visual and an analytical essay for them to write. It’s a big assignment. HOWEVER, the perks of doing it are as follows:

1. For each grade, it can replace an assignment. I’ve listed on the front page the assignments that it can replace. If a student does it, I will put the mark for this optional assignment in for one of the listed assignments, if the did better. It can only replace one, but for some, it’s a chance to get a zero changed to a mark. For others, it’s a chance to do better than they originally did.
2. I will enter this as it’s own grade. So, the mark will be in powerschool twice. If they do well, that’s double the fun!
3. If a student does not do well and it would bring down their mark, we will chalk it up to practice and I won’t put it in. The goal is to help their marks!

This assignment is made up of elements that might be on their exam that we’ve covered already this year. So, for any student, it is practice for the final. That never hurts!

Luckily, we are exactly where I intended us to be.

 

Right now, in English 1201 and 2201 we are doing short stories. This has meant a mix of reading with no evaluation, reading with journal questions, reading with multiple choice and short answers. A variety of assignments have been given in class – my intern Mc McNeil and I will be putting up alternate ones for those who did not get them done in the next few days. We will be testing on the 22nd and 23rd.

Novel studies will begin after the tests. Students in each grade were given book talks on eight different books and had to choose their top three. They were then assigned one of them to read. The novel study is one that gives them some choices in their evaluation. However, it also gets students working with literary concepts with a work I have not covered with them. This is important as it how they will be tested in their final – they will be writing an analytical essay on the unseen essay on the exam.

We will finish up beore the spring break with A Mid Summer’s Night’s Dream in 1201 and research in 2201. My intern is planning some great units for the students and I think it will be great!

In 3202 we are currently starting our major dramatic work ‘Into the Woods’. Students will complete a booklet included short answer questions, personal response and an essay. We will then look at more short stories and essays and students will complete research on real life tragedies. We’ve had some fantastic discussions on the issues that have emerged from our work so far so I look forward to continuing that process!

The exam schedule has been published! Exams that pertain to my classes are as follows:

English 1201 – Friday, January 22nd at 8:45. Two hour exam. Written in the Gym.

English 3202 – Monday, January 25th at 8:45. One hour test. Written in the classroom.

English 2201 -Tuesday, January 26th at 8:45. Two hour exam. Written in the Gym.

If we have a snow day for a full day, all exams will shift a day. So, for example, if Monday, January 25th is a snow day for the full day, all Monday exams will be written on Tuesday, Tuesday exams will be Wednesday and so on.

If we have a snow day for a half day, the ones being written while school is open stay the same. Then, exams which were supposed to take place during the time when schools are closed will shift a day. So, if school is closed in the morning of Friday, January 22nd, but open in the afternoon, the afternoon exams will still be written. Then, on Monday the 25th, the exams which should have taken place during the school closure will be written in the morning and there are no exams in the afternoon. Then the entire Monday schedule shifts to Tuesday, Tuesday to Wednesday and so on. In these cases, check the PWC website for a new schedule.

It’s exciting, that transition from studying essays to beginning our first novel study. In both 1201 and 2201, that’s where we are – beginning our first novel of the year. This means, in case you were wondering, the students have completed the following evaluation:

1. An essay booklet. 4 essays on one topic for them to study
2. A Five Paragraph response essay.
3. An essay test.

Alternate assignments for written work are in the assignment section of each course page on my site. For 2201, the retest will take place on October 28th.

The level two classes have also done a short evaluation with Speaking and Listening – we watched an episode of 30 days and they were marked on verbal responses within a group but also how they listened to others and responded to their comments. It was a great class!Now in 1201, we are beginning ‘Divergent’. We’ve done some background and have watched the movie. Students – in groups – gave me ten differences between the book and the movie. They really picked up on some great differences! We now move to evaluation on concepts and ideas from the book. We will be doing two sets of five sheets, which are all combinations of individual and group activities. Their group choosing will be part of an evaluation. Due dates (projected) include:

• Sheets One through Five – October 29th
• Sheets Six through Ten – November 12th
• Response Essay (unit completion) – November 19th.

There will be other small marks throughout. As long as there are no interruptions, that’s our goal dates!

In 2201, we are doing The Fault in our Stars. We’re part way through the movie, and will be looking at the differences between the book and the movie. We’re then going to do a LRC unit. The due date for that is Thursday, November 7th for 2201 F and Monday, November 9th for 2201 B and C. Students have been instructed to use their time wisely in the LRC as the ultimate due date is not that long after the original due date – wouldn’t want to have a quick turn around for an alternate assignment!

We will do more background work on the book and then have a response essay test. That will most likely be on the 17th for 2201 F and B and the 18th for 2201 C.

Then, for both classes, it’s on to poetry!

As you know at this point, we are working through an essay unit in English 1201 and 2201. This involves a combo of writing and reading essays. I’ve decided to focus on writing essays such as Response and Analytical essays this year, given those are the main forms used as assessment in these courses. This doesn’t mean students don’t do other forms of writing, it just means those are what I’m focusing in with this year.

In 1201, students had their last class to work on their essay booklet. Many have passed in their work. Next class – Thursday – they begin writing a five paragraph essay and will have four classes to do it. This is a response essay where they will respond to one of three quotes I’ve given them. I’ve made this due on the 8th, the day of their test. Their test will have an unseen essay and questions on it – not much different to what we’ve been doing. Then we move on to Divergent and concepts of conflict, character and narration.

It’s much the same in 2201. Students have finished their booklet work and two classes have had the booklet due. Now we’re doing the five paragraph essay, again responding to a quote. Tests are either on the 7th (slot f) or the 8th (slots b and c), which is also the day their essay is due. Then we’re on to ‘Fault in our Stars’ and the study of how all the feelings can be contained in one book.

Excellent work from students so far. It’s been a busy start to the year and one that has been both frustrating and rewarding. But I know I have some great classes and that we’re already off to a wonderful start!

Classes are getting settled, routines are beginning, students are finding their way to class much quicker. It’s the start of the the 2015-2016 school year and I will admit, my classes are great!

I have two grade 12, three grade eleven and one grade ten course, so sometimes you will see specific references to specific classes (eg, this assignment is for ‘2201 B’).
